We were beginning to wonder if it wasn’t a giant troll…
Way back when the Tesla Cybertruck rolled onto the stage during its reveal in 2019, we immediately thought it was a joke. Literally, we kept waiting for the real Cybertruck to emerge as Elon Musk laughed about trolling everyone with something that looks as if it were designed by a five-year-old. Then we watched as the CEO broke two windows, and we couldn’t believe it. But as the years have passed, we’ve wondered if maybe the revealed all-electric truck would just quietly go away.

Then over the weekend Tesla announced the first Cybertrucks rolled off its Texas assembly line. So we guess the Cybertruck is real but it might still be one big troll. Regardless, people are going to buy the thing, so maybe you’ll see one on the road one day.
Supposedly the infamous shortages during the pandemic led to the delayed release. But now that Cybertrucks are being made, it sounds like things might get serious, if people want them. TechCrunch says that during a first-quarter 2023 annual shareholder’s meeting Musk claimed that by the end of the year mass production of the Cybertruck will begin, with the ability to make 250,000 to 500,000 of them a year.
Would that many people want a Cybertruck? The design, which has been likened to a doorstop, a toddler’s doodle, and other unsightly things is definitely polarizing. We don’t know how much it will cost, though Kelley Blue Book estimates a starting price of about $50,000. That seems steep to us, but we’re constantly shocked at how people will fork over large sums for mediocre vehicles these days.
For what it’s worth, Ford just announced a price reduction for the F-150 Lightning. It’s likely the Blue Oval is a little nervous the Cybertruck is going to steal its unprofitable EV business.
