Springfield, Massachusetts Deals With Street Racing Hyundais

The crime wave continues…

Some teenagers in Springfield, Massachusetts recently learned an important life lesson about not treating public roads as their personal raceways and keeping their hands off other people’s property. Sadly, we see this kind of thing more and more in many parts of the country, leading us to question why so many kids these days love breaking the law.

Watch street racers learn some common sense the hard way here.

According to a report from Western Mass News, Springfield Police has recently arrested several teenagers who allegedly were racing stolen cars on the city’s roads. Residents told the news agency the problem has been going on for some time and that they fear one day the street races are going to turn fatal.

The most recent incident was just before 4 am on June 15 when police saw four Hyundais racing at speeds in excess of 90 mph while crossing the median line repeatedly. While two of the cars were able to get away, police arrested a 14-year-old and 15-year-old, the latter having been arrested several other times for similar stunts.

Like many other cities, Springfield is dealing with a general sense of lawlessness among a good portion of the youth and some adults. Police have been cracking down not only on street racing and car theft but also the illegal use of dirt bikes on public roads, drug trafficking, and illegal weapons possession. Often, car theft helps finance other illegal activities, so we’re not shocked.

And while it sounds lame to race Hyundais, because it is, keep in mind with many lacking an engine immobilizer they’re easy to steal with simple tools and a USB phone charger. TikTok videos the social media platform seems unwilling to take down show kids how to do it and even encourages them to join in the crime trend.
