A modified Chevy Silverado surprises with sub-10-second quarter-mile wins, including a stunning victory over a modern Ford Mustang.
The Chevrolet Silverado, a full-size pickup truck with a legacy dating back to its C/K predecessor from 1960, is better known for hauling cargo than dominating dragstrips. But a recent showdown between a first-gen Silverado and a modern Ford Mustang proves this truck has plenty of fight left in it.
The Drag Racing and Car Stuff YouTube channel compiled thrilling quarter-mile runs featuring various Chevy Silverados at iconic venues like Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida and the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway in Indiana. While the Silverado isn’t a drag racing staple, this compilation showcases the truck's surpising capability against sports cars and other challengers.
One standout race pairs an old, two-tone Silverado against a modern S550 Mustang GT at Bradenton. The Mustang had a quicker launch, clocking a faster reaction time, but the Silverado quickly closed the gap. By the finish line, the truck claimed victory with a blistering 9.99-second pass at 136 mph, leaving the Mustang trailing with a 12.25-second run at 113 mph. The sight of a classic truck besting a modern performance car is enough to make jaws drop.
In another impressive matchup, a crimson Silverado edged out a Ford Mustang despite posting a slightly slower elapsed time (10.4 seconds versus 10.33 seconds), thanks to its quicker reaction time and raw power.
The surprises didn’t end there. A modern Silverado gave a Toyota GR Supra a run for its money, leaving the sports coupe visibly shaken. Another match saw a single-cab Silverado outpace a Jeep Grand Cherokee, while a blue Silverado clocked another sub-10-second victory (9.98 seconds) against a white Mustang GT.
These races highlight the adaptability and hidden performance potential of Chevrolet's iconic pickup. Whether modified for speed or simply defying expectations, these Silverados prove that a truck can dominate not just on job sites but also on the quarter-mile. So, are Chevy Silverados nasty enough for the dragstrip? Based on these performances, the answer is a resounding yes.
