Kansas City teens restore a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle into an award-winning electric vehicle with guidance from Operation Breakthrough and Travis Kelce.
In a remarkable blend of innovation and community spirit, a group of Kansas City teens has transformed a vintage 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle into a cutting-edge electric vehicle, with crucial support from NFL star Travis Kelce. Over three years, 81 students from Operation Breakthrough, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering underserved youth, collaborated to bring the car back to life.
Discovered abandoned on a farm near Springfield, Missouri, the Chevelle required extensive work to restore its former glory. Oz Qureshi, director of Mind Drive, explained the scale of the project: “About 60% of the metal was replaced. It’s a complete frame-off restoration. Everything was replaced or restored.”

The rebuild wasn’t just about repairing a classic car; it was about creating a unique piece of engineering. The students converted the Chevelle into an electric vehicle, equipping it with a digital dashboard that mirrors the original 1969 interior design.
The project was made possible through the support of Travis Kelce’s 87 & Running Foundation, which provided critical funding and resources. Kelce’s involvement added inspiration to an already ambitious initiative, connecting Kansas City’s vibrant community with the next generation of innovators.
The electrified Chevelle made an immediate impact, winning Best in Show at its debut competition in Austin, Texas. The honor is a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of the teens and their mentors.
“It was a huge honor,” Qureshi said of the achievement.
This restoration project showcases not only the students’ technical skills but also the power of community collaboration and mentorship. The Chevelle stands as a symbol of what’s possible when innovation, education, and local support come together to empower young minds.
