Classic 911 looks with modern performance.
From AC Cobras to Rolls-Royce Phantoms, there have been a number of classic cars converted to electric vehicles, and this 964-generation Porsche 911 Targa is just the latest. Sporting the timeless lines of a 911 with the modern performance of a Tesla Model S, Ionic Cars has created what it calls the "world's first production electric Porsche 911 Targa."
Instead of the original 3.6-liter flat-six engine, Ionic Cars repurposed the drive unit of a Tesla into this sport cars adding more performance with zero exhaust emissions. Compared to the stock 247-horsepower output of the 964 911, this one is laying down 440 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque allowing for a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, which is on par with a 964 911 Turbo! On top of that, there's no range anxiety with this 911 as Ionic Cars claims an all-electric driving range of at least 180.
While this 964 EV doesn't appear to be in production just yet, these specs do sound promising. Best of all, this electric conversion is fully reversible, and it even comes with a Tesla warranty on the drive unit, so you don't have to worry about ruining a classic car.
It's not just aftermarket companies building classic EVs either. Chevrolet teased an electric sports car back in March, and Ford just showed off its all-electric Cobra Jet 1400. This 964 is actually Ionic Cars' second electrified classic after it introduced an EV version of a 1967 Mercedes-Benz SL, and it doesn't plan on stopping here. Future products include stuffing electric drive components between the big fenders of a classic Land Rover and under the long, svelte hood of a Jaguar E Type.
