Stirling Moss is honored in one final send off of his 300 SLR.
Mercedes has been at the top of the European racing circuit since its first race in 1899, but few people truly know the vast history behind these beautifully designed racing vehicles. One of the most iconic racing-inspired sports coupes was the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing coupe. Of these incredible vehicles, one particular model was deemed glorious enough to be owned by one of the UK's greatest racers, Stirling Moss. The man himself decided on this choice of vehicle for the sole reason that it gave him the same driving feel like one of the brand's most spectacular sports cars ever to be produced.
Check out some 1920s and 1930s racing footage here.
The vehicle in question is the Mercedes SLR roadster which carried Stirling Moss into the world of racing superstardom as he became the first British person ever to win the Mille Miglia. This incredible feat was carried out on May the first, 1955, when the racer completed the 1,000-mile road race at speeds so great that the surveillance planes, responsible for recording the racers while they completed their journey, couldn't keep up. So naturally, this stirred up quite the commotion for the Mercedes brand as it meant that the car was capable of things never before seen on this course.
On either side of the vehicle, as well as the hood, you will find the number 722 boldly painted on with care as if to signify the car's existence to the rest of the world. This number hints at the original starting time of that glorious race that started it all. As a tribute to the great Stirling Moss, who passed away at the age of 90, a video of the car was filmed as a tribute to him as it features the man driving this insane vehicle through the streets of London.
