Abandoned 1978 Porsche 911 Targa Restored to Glory After Two Decades of Neglect

A forgotten 1978 Porsche 911 Targa, abandoned for 20 years, undergoes a stunning transformation, reclaiming its iconic status.

An abandoned 1978 Porsche 911 Targa, left untouched for two decades, has been given a stunning transformation thanks to the expertise of Larry Kosilla of AMMO NYC. Once a derelict classic covered in grime, mold, and rodent infestations, this iconic sports car now glows with promise, ready to return to the road.

The car’s story is a familiar one: retired from use after its original owner passed away, the 911 sat under a tarp in a backyard, protected only partially from the elements. Though the tarp saved the car from severe rust, moisture and neglect had taken their toll. When Kosilla began the restoration process, the car’s faded yellow paint, peeling hood, and moldy interior showed just how far it had fallen.

The Porsche 911 Targa, a unique open-top variant first introduced in 1966, was a standout for the 1978 model year. It featured a 3.0-liter flat-six engine delivering 172 horsepower and 189 pound-feet of torque in U.S. spec. While this particular example's engine was seized, it retained much of its original charm, including its classic removable roof.

Kosilla’s detailing magic worked wonders. The exterior was carefully cleaned, revealing vibrant yellow paintwork, while modern cleaning products restored the interior to near-new condition, removing years of mold and grime. The transformation extended to the engine, which Kosilla and a friend managed to free, setting the stage for a full mechanical restoration.

The 911 Targa’s rarity adds to its value. Porsche produced 11,243 units in 1978, with 5,015 sold in the U.S.—of which 2,579 were Targa models, making it slightly more popular stateside than in Europe. These numbers, combined with the car’s timeless design and performance legacy, make it a sought-after collectible.

With a complete restoration planned, this 911 is set to become a gleaming example of Porsche’s iconic engineering. Its revival is a testament to the enduring appeal of classic cars and the dedication of enthusiasts who refuse to let history fade away.
