A restored muscle car with a legendary story.
A meticulously restored 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454, VIN 1D37U2R578002, is turning heads with its storied past and powerful performance. This particular Chevelle, now showing just 24,887 miles, is believed to have retained its original mileage throughout its life, with an insurance appraisal from 2005 reflecting the same. Owned by Gene Young since 2008, the car’s journey includes a colorful history involving multiple owners and engine changes.
Originally, this 1972 Chevelle came from the factory equipped with a 402 cubic-inch LS3 engine. However, according to its previous owners, the factory engine was blown and replaced under warranty. When the replacement engine also failed, Chevrolet declined further support. It is believed that the original owner then ordered a new crate LS6 454 and had it installed by the dealership, transforming the car into a true powerhouse. While this story has not been fully documented, it adds to the mystique of this rare muscle car.
The Chevelle is also said to have been special ordered by a lady from Hullman Chevrolet in Cullman, Alabama, who declined to accept the car when it arrived without the power windows she requested. The car was then purchased by Artie McGlocklin of Athens, Alabama, who later sold it to Daniel Hicks of Hayden, Alabama. Hicks sold the Chevelle to Randy Goss from Rockmart, Georgia, and in 2008, it found its current home with Gene Young. Each owner attested to the belief that the car’s mileage is original, though it has seen minimal use since Young acquired it.
During its time with Mr. Young, the Chevelle received further restoration work, though it had already been professionally repainted to an exceptional standard by the previous owner. The car is now in immaculate condition, with its show-ready appearance making it a prime example of classic American muscle.
While the factory engine is no longer present, the LS6 454 engine provides immense power, living up to the Chevelle SS’s reputation as a muscle car icon. With its stunning paint job, minimal mileage, and detailed restoration, this 1972 Chevelle SS LS6 is a dream for muscle car enthusiasts and collectors alike.
