Watch these two GM legends go head to head to decide the faster car.
The Pontiac GTO has a reputation in the classic car community for being one of America's first muscle cars. While Pontiac didn't exactly invent the idea of the small car with a big engine under the hood, they certainly did an excellent job capitalizing on the concept with cars such as the GTO, Firebird, and other cars like those. Since then, Pontiac has been remembered as the top-of-the-line GM performance brand in the world of monstrous muscle cars. Naturally, this created a lot of competition within the GM line up with a particular rival being Chevy. So today, we're going to find out who made the better muscle car, Chevy or Pontiac?
See what happens when a Cuda takes on a GTO here.
Stepping up to the plate to go head to head with the GTO is a 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II sporting an awesome L79 327 ci V8 under the hood. That engine boasts an output of 350 horsepower and 360 ft/lb of torque. That much power from such a small engine is an incredible feat but will this four-speed manual monster compete with the 1967 GTO?
Powering this 1967 Pontiac GTO is a 400 ci V8 engine which is equipped with the HO package. That package lets this car squeeze out an incredible 360 horsepower and 438 ft/lb of torque. A four-speed manual transmission transferred all of that power to the rear wheels. However, this power transfer may not be enough to compete with the Chevy because this car features a set of 3.90 gears versus the Chevy's 4.11. The Chevy is also lighter as it sits at just 3062lbs as opposed to the much heavier 3720lbs.
Of course, things seem to be leaning in Chevy's favor, but we're about to find out who will win this ridiculous race once and for all. Both cars were neck and neck in round one, with the Chevy maintaining a slight lead over the GTO. This resulted in a win for the Chevy at just 13.4 seconds, and the GTO ran a 13.6 second quarter mile pass. However, round two had a very different result as the GTO pulled ahead and took the win. Finally, round three saw the trophy go to the Chevy as it crossed the finish line just a tenth of a second before the GTO.
This extremely close race saw the competition between two of America's most iconic GM muscle cars. Both vehicles performed exceptionally well and even showed off some of the most excellent options you could choose for their respective times. We hope to see many more of these rivalry races in the future.
