This 1966 Plymouth Satellite is just one of 503 produced with the 426 cubic inch Hemi producing 425 horsepower
The Plymouth Satellite is one of the lesser known muscle cars to venture out of the stables in the sixties. With some particularly rare Hemi models during ‘65 that had engines based on their racing derivatives, Chrysler had to come up with a slightly tamer model for the streets.
With the 426 cubic inch Hemi dropping a pupil dilating 550-horsepower onto the asphalt, it was simply too mad. Whilst the muscle car dynasty were fantasizing over GTO’s and Camaro’s, Chrysler had somehow cooked up a Satellite that put the fear into their competitors.
Despite its ludicrous output, with a 12.5:1 compression ratio it needed to calm itself before being thrust into a street car. The cast iron heads were replaced with aluminium counterparts along with dual Carter four barrels for the Holley carburettor and 425 horsepower was the quoted figure. That said, it is widely accepted that this figure was economical with the truth. A proven myth gracing muscle cars of the era that also died with them, sadly.
Only 503 of these Satellites with street Hemis were made like this one featured here, and it’s no surprise as to why. With a price tag of $1000 for the engine alone, the sticker price for a bare bones example with just this engine as the sole option you would be gulping at an invoice with $4000 attached to its summary.
The car featured here has some particularly amusing original features to really turn up the intrigue. Inside the door jam a sticker notes: “Notice. This car is equipped with a 426 cu. in. engine (and other special equipment.) This car is intended for use in supervised acceleration trials and is not intended for highway or general passenger car use. Accordingly, this vehicle is sold “as is”, and the 12 month or 12,000 mile vehicle warranty coverage and 5 years or 50,000 mile powertrain warranty coverage does not apply to this vehicle.”
Although this signage hints at its ungodly potential, the options list is quite the spectacle too. Heavy duty suspension was fitted from the factory, along with Police grade 11 inch drum brakes all round. Air conditioning provides the icing on the proverbial cake, and what a presence.
