The Ford Mustang’s 55 year heritage has spawned many variants of the iconic pony car, however, there’s one with a particular cult status that highlights the breed’s glory days. A Mustang Boss 302 is a prized possession amongst collectors, and this red 1970 example offered by Restore A Muscle Car is a shining example of a model simply known as ‘The Boss’.
Isn’t it a stunner?! This beautifully restored Mustang Boss 302 positively shines in its deep shade of red with black contrasting accents. Its traditional long bonnet, pronounced shoulders, and sloping roofline are joined by sporty window louvers and a prominent hood scoop. It’s one mean looking machine.
The interior appears as good as new with the upholstery looking fresh, and the Mustang’s wooden trim present and correct. All four occupants that can fit into the muscle car’s cabin are treated to an AM radio and a surprising amount of cabin space.
Under the hood of this fastback is a 302 Ci Boss V8 engine designed to silence this car’s rivals of the day. This 4.9-liter motor packs 290hp and is a race-bred engine originally designed to compete in the SCCA Trans Am championship of 1969 and 1970 — the latter of which the car won. A 3.50 Traction-Lok differential and a four-speed close-ratio transmission help this car’s ponies to the ground.

The Boss was born out of a self perpetuating arms race amongst manufacturers to dominate the muscle car game, resulting in the most competitive era of American car building ever seen. They say that war is the mother of invention, well, the Boss 302 was the direct result of Ford attempting to steal the Chevrolet Camaro’s thunder.
