36 cars and 36 winners... all for a great cause!
If you're looking for a unique gift for the ultimate car lover this holiday season, how about the chance at winning one of 36 Chevrolet Corvettes being raffled off for a good cause.
Peter Max became a household name among car enthusiasts when his collection of 36 Corvettes was found wasting away in a New York parking garage. The collection eventually sold to the current owners, who created Corvette Heroes as a way to raffle off all of the cars to benefit the National Guard Educational Foundation (NGEF).
After 25 years of sitting in a New York storage facility, the Corvettes were all in dirty, grimy conditions, but each one has been restored or repaired back to its original glory. The collection includes a Corvette from each model year from 1953 through the sweepstakes, which took place in 1989, and now these 'Vettes are ready for new homes.
These cars were originally part of a massive giveaway by VH1 30 years ago that required people to call a 900-number to register, each phone call cost $2. Dennis Amodeo was the lucky winner, but he almost immediately sold the collection to artist Peter Max who had a grand plan of turning each car into its each piece of art. As is the case with some projects, Max's plans got the best of him and the cars ended up sitting for 25 years. Today, the Corvettes are valued anywhere from $500,000 for the '53 'Vette to $10,000 for most of the C4 Corvettes.
The sweepstakes began on July 1, 2019 and it will end on April 30, 2020, and the winners will be selected on May 15, 2020. To enter for your chance to win one of these Corvettes, you have four options: make a tax-deductible donation via the website or toll-free number to receive an entry ticket, receive a complimentary entry or send a self-addressed postage paid envelope to the NGEF to receive a free entry. If you're buying a ticket, prices range from $3 for a single ticket or $5,000 for 7,200 tickets (or $1.44 per ticket) – at that price, that's less than the fee VH1 charged back in 1989. And since Corvette Heroes is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the donations to enter this sweepstakes should be tax deductible in most cases!
