An epic scale of period-correct classic cars were sourced for this movie's production!
Quentin Tarantino's latest movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood opened to critical acclaim on July 26, and while it opened to critical acclaim, it offers something especially satisfying for car enthusiasts. According to The Wrap, Tarantino's ninth film assembled more than 2,000 period-correct classic cars adding authenticity and a little extra automotive eye candy. In the past, Tarantino films such as Death Proof, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction have featured a heavy use of classic movie cars, but this latest film seems to have taken automotive casting to a new level.
In an interview with the film’s picture car coordinator, Steven Butcher, he said that on average, a movie will use between 300-500 cars. His job is usually to suggest options for a hero car, but for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, he was tasked with finding all the cars for this movie including the various hero cars as well as "extras" for streets and parking lots. Everywhere you look in this movie, it's filled with classic and vintage cars.
The true hero car in this movie is the 1966 Cadillac DeVille driven by Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Rick Dalton. An interesting note about this car is that not only is the same car that Michael Madsen's character (Mr. Blonde) drove in Reservoir Dogs, but it's actually owned by Madsen and was partially restored for this movie. The blue Volkswagen Karmann Ghia driven by Brad Pitt's character, Cliff Booth, was also used in another Tarantino – Kill Bill. Being a movie about the Manson family murders, it also uses a replica of the Ford Galaxie that was used in the murders; apparently the actual Manson family Galaxie had been located in a private collection but Tarantino ended up going with an exact replica in the end.
