The 1972 Dodge Challenger was one helluva car when it was in production, and its popularity has stood the test of time as one of the most popular muscle cars today. These aren’t cars that make for popular candidates for radical modernization and modifications, but when a Mopar muscle car is undertaken as a restomod, things tend to get pretty serious. A great example of well-executed Challenger build can be seen in this overhauled 1972 with modern powertrain power.
Setup as a nasty street car with trackable function, the core of this build is a nearly 500-horsepower 6.1-liter Hemi engine, borrowed from a 2008 SRT, and it sits inside a well-manicured powder coated engine bay with closeout panels. The engine exhales through a set of TTI headers, and is backed by a 46RE automatic transmission with shift kit. A custom driveshaft funnels the power into a Dana 60 with aggressive 4.10:1 gearing by the Summers Brothers. Its fuel is supplied by a Tanks INC tank with fuel pump inside with fuel regulator, and 3/8” branded lines front to rear.
To carry the power, the Challenger rides on a GTS suspension with tubular front end that includes a live rack and pinion, and the rear is a four-link suspension. Dual adjustable Viking coil over shocks take duty on all four corners. Braking power comes from Wilwood, with 6-piston front brakes and 4-piston on rear - a Hydraboost unit is supplied by a PSC reservoir. This all rolls on Pro Wheels with Federal tires.
The body wrapped around the build is also not untouched. Unique looks come from a 1970 front clip and custom built AAR Cuda style hood, shaved marker lights, filled and fitted rear, tucked bumpers, flush mounted front and rear glass - the grille and other trim pieces have been powder coated grill and trim pieces and adjustable chin splitter. The paint is Tango Mango pearl on top, Diamond Black pearl on bottom and a silver metallic stripe in the middle with 6 coats of clear. Then the car was professionally color sanded and buffed to a glossy glass finish.
The interior is custom orange and black leather and suede by BSI. The seats are originally from a 2015 Challenger.
