With GS standing for Gran Sport, the Buick GS 455 is a looker but also quite the performer with the number after its name standing for the large 455cui V8 tucked neatly under its hood. For the 1970 model year, the 400cui was replaced with a 455cui V8 engine for the GS 455 model. The base model had an output of 350-bhp and a staggering 510 lb/ft of torque at 2,800 rpms. A Stage 1 option was available with the large-displacement engine topped with a single 4-barrel carburetor and bumped the power up an additional 10-horsepower. A Stage 2 option was offered but very few of those cars are known to exist. In fact, three are known and they were assembled as Stage 1 cars from the factory. Backing up the large 455cui V8 engine in this Buick is a 4-speed manual transmission. Inside the car is an immaculate white interior with a large bench spanning the rear and white bucket seats up front. A white convertible top protects the cabin and adds contrast to its dark, glossy exterior.
Factory options for the GS455 included air conditioning, tachometer and gauges, remote driver's mirror, and an AM radio that supplies songs through a rear speaker. Power steering makes navigating simple, and power disc brakes easily bring everything to a stop.
Buick produced 1,416 examples of the GS 455 convertibles for the 1970 model year, and production came from three different plants. A mere 232 of these convertibles came equipped with the Stage 1 performance option, and out of those, only 67 were given a Muncie M21 four-speed transmission. Out of those 67, only 22 were installed with the factory air conditioning.
