This luxury sedan is supercharged and incredibly unique.
If you haven’t heard of the Toyota Crown before, don’t worry. Pretty much only hardcore JDM fans know this luxury sedan, since it was never offered in North America. That means this 1991 Toyota Crown has been imported from Japan for your motoring pleasure. It’s a right-hand-drive car with a refrigerator in the rear deck, along with other amazing quirks that make it so much fun to show off.
While the white paint looks as close to flawless as possible on a car this age, much of the exterior styling doesn’t scream for attention. Since most Americans don’t know what the Crown badges even mean, this is not something that will draw stares everywhere you go. But pull up to a JDM gathering with this ride and you’ll get a nice crowd in no time.
The plush red interior is probably shocking for most people to see, since they’re likely expecting something more like what you’d find in an early 90s Camry. The seats and carpet are quite nice, but by far the coolest feature is the refrigerator for the backseat passengers. It needs a little elbow grease to work correctly, but that’s a small price to pay for such a unique ride.
It’s rare to get both power and reliability in the same car, but that’s exactly what the supercharged 2.0-liter inline six-cylinder 1G-GZE engine in this Crown provides. You’re not going to smoke anyone in the quarter mile using this luxury cruiser, but the engine won’t feel like it’s struggling and always has something to give as you tool around town or out on the open road.
You don’t need to worry about getting trouble with the law simply by purchasing this car. The seller states it was legally imported into the US, so everything’s good there.
No other Toyota passenger car has been in continuous production for as long as the Crown, including the venerable Corolla. Launched in 1955, it was the first passenger car both developed and built completely in Japan, making it a symbol of national pride. The 1991 model year is part of the eighth generation of the Crown, which ran from 1987 to 1999, and it ushered in a design refresh. Shelton Classics & Performance is giving you the chance to own this up-and-coming JDM classic that will surely appreciate in value as time marches on.
