This Merc' packs a big engine and even bigger style!
After hot rods, lead sleds are probably the most expressive style of vehicle customization that has ever existed with each car showing the personality of the driver, and this 1950 Mercury is a perfect example of that. Nicknamed MercZilla, this beautiful lead sled was up for auction recently through SG Auctions, but it was among just a handful of cars (out of more than 350 vehicles) that failed to find a new home. If you're in the market for a cool custom that is ready to win awards, the auction site has this 'Merc listed as Still For Sale.
Staying true to the lead sled style, this Mercury sits low, and the door handles and body chrome have been shaved for a clean, smooth look. For an added touch of customization, the B-pillar posts have been removed, and the side quarter windows are now removable for a classic hardtop appearance. The headlights and taillights have been frenched, and the car’s exterior is finished in an eye-catching shade of purple called Prowler Plum Mist paint.
As loud as this lead sled looks just sitting there, it gets cranked up to an 11 when you fire up the professionally built 402 CID V8 tucked under that long hood. This engine has been bored over, and it’s been built up with roller rockers, a bigger cam and lifters with a 660 lift. An 850 cfm double pumper Demon carb sits atop the engine, and an MDS ignition system provides all the added power this engine needs.
For a little more attitude, this big block breathes through a three-inch exhaust system, while the Flowmaster mufflers and electric cut-offs ensure this car will be heard long before it’s seen. Since lead sleds are intended for cruising, this Merc’ uses four-wheel power disc brakes, power steering, power brakes and air conditioning, and the engine is backed by a proven 700R4 automatic transmission with a 3,500 rpm stall converter.
Second chances don't come around very often in the custom car world, so if you want a car that sits low, cruises strong and commands attention, this ’50 Mercury is the perfect addition to any collection. It didn't find a new home at the SG Auctions event on October 18-19, but this lead sled can still be yours today.
