They say the most expensive car you can buy is a cheap Land Rover.
Buying cars at auction can be a bit of a gamble, especially when you have no idea what their mechanical state might be. That gamble can really pay off and you end up with an amazing vehicle for an incredible deal, or you might find you’ve spent some of your hard-earned cash on a stinker. In the video below, YouTuber Samcrac snags a Land Rover Range Rover at auction over the internet, having seen 10 photos of the SUV and that’s it.
So this isn’t the first time this guy has bought a vehicle at auction. If you watch his channel, you’ll see he’s an old pro, only in the past he’s gone for crash-damage, running vehicles at insurance auctions. This purchase is a bit out of his element, but apparently the temptation of flipping such a luxurious Land Rover was too great.
We’ve all been there: you’re cruising some online classifieds and you run across an incredible deal. It’s a car you might have thought was way out of your league, but for reasons unexplained it falls completely in your budget. Do you go for it? Or do you sit there and worry it has so many problems you’re buying something which will be featured on a future barn find show because you left it buried under crap rather than stare at your atrocious financial blunder?
As you probably suspected, this off-roader has some big problems. While the dead battery is a little trouble, that chocolate milk-like oil is the first indication bringing this truck back is going to take more than a little bit of elbow grease. Samcrac rightfully goes ahead and assumes the oil issue is from a coolant leak into the crankcase, considering the coolant overflow reservoir was empty. But he also realizes that while a bad head gasket is likely the cause, there are other potential sources for the problem. He leaves things off in a bit of a cliffhanger, but the lesson is still the same: the most expensive car you can buy is a cheap Land Rover.
