With some know-how, this Corvair would be a fantastic car.
At first glance, this 1962 Chevy Corvair might not look too impressive, but in the right hands it could become something truly great. A wildly unique car for its time, and even by today’s standards, this fine example has an absolutely breathtaking body, giving you something solid to work from. While not currently running, these cars are relatively easy to repair and keep going, so a mechanic or someone with the right knowledge will be able to polish this diamond to perfection.
Thanks to an onslaught of compact cars from foreign automakers arriving in the US market and their ensuing popularity, GM decided to release a direct competitor, the Chevy Corvair. Mimicking the architecture of the VW Beetle, the Corvair came with an air-cooled rear engine. This makes the car incredible unique, especially among American models, and an important part of automotive history.
GM made the Chevrolet Corvair in a variety of formats, including as a sedan, coupe, and wagon. But having a convertible is perhaps the most attractive way to experience such an unusual American car. The Ermine White paint looks good on this vehicle, and it has been resprayed, so you get a fairly clean slate. Note that the chrome trim and badges are all present. The black convertible top is in somewhat good repair as well.
You’ll need to do some work on the interior, but there are some nice features included, like a direct air heater. Two front bucket seats are quite nice to have, and the rear bench upholstery is in overall good condition and even comes with a nice patina. Plenty of original details abound, like the steering wheel, gauges, and carpeting.
This Corvair has the factory 145ci engine with 2 one-barrel carbs, all in original condition. An automatic transmission makes driving that much easier, once you get the engine operational again. With the right vision, this car could become something quite stylish and fun.
