Thanks to their legendary status at drag strips across the United States, quite a few people scooped up Grand Nationals and tweaked them seven ways to Sunday. While they were able to extract loads of horsepower and torque, plus maybe even chase after that elusive 10-second car, that means few bone-stock versions have survived today. This 1987 Buick Grand National is one of those rare treasures, plus it has precious few miles on the clock.
Aggressive looks come via the mesmerizing black paint job, which is completely original and has been polished to a shine. It perfectly accentuates the straight and unblemished body panels plus all the OE badges. Stock wheels and lights help keep this a purist’s dream. This car has the T-top, so you can pull out those roof panels and let the air flow through while cruising. A meticulously well-preserved interior has all the factory switchgear, gauges, headliner, and upholstery in excellent condition.
What really will get everyone worked up is the turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 engine. It produces 235 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque as advertised by Buick, which were monumental amounts back in 1987. That’s enough to do a 14-second quarter mile, which blew away the Pontiac Firebird and Chevrolet Camaro back in the day.
In the 1980s some were declaring American muscle was dead, but GM miraculously allowed Buick to prove that wrong in a shocking way. Aggressive turbocharging and a solid engine provided to be enough to make the Buick Grand National faster than many exotics at the time. These cars in pretty much any condition are highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors alike, and as more are unfortunately wrecked at tracks and otherwise lost, those remaining will continue to appreciate in value.
