22 classic Lamborghinis attended the Japanese classic car event, but only one could win...
Car culture, other than the sensation of drift cars, is often forgotten about in Japan due to its monumental congestion and ever tightening rules on owning a car. However, the Japanese automotive scene truly loves classics, something that was clear from the recent ‘Concorso d’Eleganza Kyoto 2019’ event. The was a strong showing from Lamborghini with 22 of the 54 vehicles emanating from the Italian marque.
Set in the beautiful gardens of the historic 1603 Nijo Castle, the cherry blossom made an astonishing backdrop for the cavalcade of Raging Bulls that attended. The event is split into various categories with 20 of the Lamborghinis being entered into three classes representing time periods. Examples of the Miura, Espada, Islero, Jarama, Jalpa, Urraco, Countach, LM 002, and Diablo were all present and correct.
The ‘Best Lamborghini’ trophy and winner of the ‘Lamborghini 1963-1970’ class was an immaculate 1971 Miura SV. Said car had previously won ‘Best in Show’ at the ‘2017 Lamborghini Concours d’Élégance Neuchâtel’, so its victory in Japan comes as no surprise. A 1975 Countach LP400 won the ‘Lamborghini 1971-1985’ class, and the coveted ‘Most Desirable to Drive’ award. The final Lamborghini category (Lamborghini 1986-2000) was won by a stealthy black 2000 Diablo GT.
Another special Lamborghini in attendance was a 1965 3500 GTZ Zagato that not only won the ‘Race and Prototypes’ category, but also the coveted ‘Best of Show’. In addition, the rare Italian supercar also claimed a special award dubbed ‘Best Zagato’ that marks the design house’s 100th anniversary.
Fifteen of the Lamborghinis in attendance then took part in the Tour d’Eleganza Kyoto 2019 which consisted of three days of driving through the land fo the rising sun. Many of these vehicles were prepared by Lamborghini’s in-house restoration department, Polo Storico.
The event was a true show of force from the classic Lamborghini community, but also an amazing spectacle.
