Who says you can't get an affordable modern classic?
After the original, first-gen (early) Mustangs, the restyled 1987-newer Fox Body Mustangs might have been the most important Mustang body style of all time, and they're surely starting to rise in popularity. One key reason for this resurgence is that these modern classics are still very attainable, and this 1988 Ford Mustang GT Convertible auctioned off at the Winter 2019 Raleigh Classic is a perfect example. This super-clean and all-original Fox Body Mustang was sold at the Raleigh Classic Car Auctions event for just $8,500.
Being the 1988 model year, this Mustang GT is a true classic, yet it has obviously lived a pampered life with the body and interior showing in great condition. The plastic bumpers don't appear to have the fading or cracking issue that you see on many of these Mustangs, while the red cloth interior is clean and wear-free. This car's condition were possible thanks to it formerly being part of a Fox Body enthusiast's collection as well as having just 79,000 miles on the odometer, which are believed to be original – the overall condition of this car seems to back that up and a vehicle history report should prove so.
Under the hood, this 1988 Ford Mustang GT Convertible still has its original, numbers-matching 5.0-liter V8 and five-speed manual transmission. This 225 horsepower engine provides plenty of get up and go, but it's enjoyable at any speed hearing the exhaust note playing through dual exhaust outlets. Of course, this sound is even better with the Mustang's top down, and making this Mustang even better, the all-white soft top is brand new!
Not only did Mustangs like this rekindle the pony car spirit, they also helped keep the Mustang alive. And to think that the front-wheel drive Ford Probe was almost the replacement for the Mustang!
