The first was the return of the Corvette roadster. When Chevrolet announced the return in 1985, ‘Vette enthusiasts couldn’t have been happier. However, unlike the past models, the ’86 Corvette convertible cost an additional $5,000! This was a result of the C4’s different chassis and body structure than its predecessors. There was still plenty of reason to celebrate, as Chevy hadn’t offered a convertible option since 1975.
The second exciting piece of news in 1986 was that Corvette would pace the Indy 500 for the second time. All 1986 Corvette convertibles were designed to be pace car replicas and came with dealer or customer-applied decals for both doors. By the end of the year, 7,315 of the 35,109 ‘Vettes were convertibles; that’s just 20 percent. All of them were considered to be “pace cars” regardless of the color.
