This isn’t some soft Hummer.
Before GM brought to market the ultra-soft Hummer H2 and H3, AM General was supplying the US Military with vehicles fit for going to war. This 1985 AM General M998 Humvee isn’t about looking pretty or staying comfortable. It puts rugged utility first and foremost, which is what real SUVs should be all about.
Wearing an appropriate Camouflage Green, this Humvee is ready to take you places which previously were impossible. Yes, this is the vehicle you select to embarrass Jeeps, which have grown soft with luxuries and other silly things. Instead, you get a 95-gallon tank, proving this ride is meant to really take you places far from civilization. You won’t need to hoist yourself up to get inside, but those large tires help quite a bit with ground clearance for climbing over trail obstacles. Four-wheel drive combined with a two-speed locking transfer makes getting through particularly challenging areas far easier.
A 6.2-liter diesel engine gives this Humvee plenty of low-end torque to get through all kinds of difficult terrain. With an automatic transmission and power steering, you get to enjoy some ease in driving, instead of having to wrangle this thing constantly. Four-wheel disc brakes are also included, which do a great job of bringing this beast to a stop in a hurry.
Despite this being a rough-and-tumble vehicle, the canvas top and door inserts are in fantastic condition, showing no rips or other signs of damage. The body is made of aluminum, so you don’t have to deal with corrosion issues, plus that keeps the curb weight down so performance gets a nice uplift.
Of course, you’re going to get stares and people asking to take a picture everywhere you take this Humvee. It’s so wide and has a stance that just screams military toughness. If you’re looking for something to really stand out from the usual assortment of vehicles, you can grab this Humvee from Streetside Classics.
