Who needs a rainbow when you can drive a beautiful front-engine Porsche?
The 911 might be Porsche's most iconic model and the Boxster/Cayman are the most fun to drive, but it's the front-engine models that currently dominate the sales chart. A little over 20 years ago, Porsche had just dipped its toes in the front-engine market with the 924, and that entry-level coupe was followed up by a more performance-minded grand touring car, the 1978 Porsche 928.
It's getting difficult to find someone who is willing to part with a 928 in excellent condition, but if you act fast, DriverSource of Houston has this beautiful example of a low-mileage, first year Porsche 928. On top of its desirable first-year status and under 21,000 miles showing on the odometer, this 1978 Porsche 928 also comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and it has the verified numbers-matching engine and transmission.
Not only is this car in great, well-documented shape, but it has an eye-catching classic look with the iconic five-hole Porsche wheels, and a stunning Cashmere Beige exterior paint color that is paired with the checkerboard-pattern Pasha cloth interior. Of course, the overall design of the 928 is unmistakable with its bug-eyed, pop-up headlights, sunk-in taillights and the unmistakable roofline with lots of glass.
Introduced for the 1978 model year, the Porsche 928 was Porsche's first mass-produced V-8 model – opening the door for today's Cayennes and Panameras – and it still stands as the only front-engine, V-8-powered two-door that Porsche has ever made. When it launched, the 928 was powered by a 4.5-liter V-8 producing 219 horsepower, but when production of the 928 ended in 1995, there was a 5.4-liter V-8 under the hood laying down 345 horsepower.
