This tribute has upgraded looks and mechanicals.
While this 1969 Pontiac Firebird Coupe might only be a tribute, it has the looks and performance to live up to its aspirations. Right now this car is for sale, and the asking price is far lower than you would pay for a genuine Trans Am of the same vintage, while offering similar performance. For that reason, it’s a great car for someone who wants the experience of driving a ’69 Trans Am but can’t quite afford one.
Looks are great, but what matters most about this Pontiac is what’s under it all. Pop the hood and you’ll find the Firebird underwent a heart transplant, swapping out its lesser engine for a 400ci V8 from 1971. Bolted up to that powerhouse is a Tans Specialties TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, so shifts happen quickly and accurately. Thanks to a 10-bolt posi rear, you can hook up and hurry down the track without much fuss. That’s not all, because Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection and a dual-fan aluminum radiator has been added. So as you can plainly see, this is not just a Firebird playing Trans Am dress up.
While the mechanicals are impressive, you still have to admire the cosmetics of this car. The Cameo White body looks great with Blue Trans Am stripes, instantly catching your eye. Closer admiration reveals a dual-cowl hood, rear spoiler, and even Trans Am badges to complete the look. There’s scant use of chrome, which mostly is applied to the center of the body-color front cumpter, side mirrors, window frames, and rear bumper. Topping off the excellent exterior recreation are 15-inch Rallye II wheels.
You’ll find the same level of execution in making the interior look like a genuine Trans Am. An overall blue color scheme is found on the door panels, carpeting, dash, and seats. The seats also feature blue custom knit-weave vinyl inserts, a nice upgrade to enjoy. Burl wood appliques on the dash and center console are period-correct, while the dash and gauges are original. Working air conditioning makes driving this in the summer far more enjoyable. Trans Am badges on the door panels are a nice touch.
You’ll find this car has been lovingly upgraded and cared for. The undercarriage is as clean as the body, with zero signs of rust. It promises a lot of fun and to turn many heads, so don’t expect this Trans Am tribute to last.
