By the second generation, the Fairlane made such an impact on the market that Ford outsold Chevrolet for the fist time in over twenty years. Throughout its seven generation run, the Fairlane seemed to be ever changing and in many ways shaped the brands future line up.
Beginning with small displacement, low horsepower power plants like Ford's 3.7-liter straight-6, 4.5-liter V8, and 4.8-liter Y-block engines, as the horsepower wars started to heat up the Fairlane quickly drove head on into the large displacement engine category with the introduction of the 390 cubic inch big block. Although more powerful engine options closely followed with the goal of dominating the race track, the 390 was the most popular high horsepower street car option and was featured in the new GT and GTA packages of 1966.
Even though the Fairlane’s popularity called for mass production at the time, finding one of these cars well optioned, in its original form, and in good condition for an affordable price may prove to be a task.
