Back in the early to mid-1960s, the Ferrari versus Ford rivalry was at an all-time high. It's a famous automotive rivalry that has cemented its place in the history books. Check out this video that follows Bob Bondurant, Carroll Shelby's lead driver for Shelby American and Ford, and his victory at the '65 FIA GT Championship. This video is part of a documentary that is currently in the development stage.
Ferrari and Ford battled long and hard as they fought to claim the championship title in 1964, but an important race in Monza, Italy was cancelled before Ford could claim victory. And even more unfortunate for Carroll Shelby's team was the fact that they were just 5 points shy of taking home the championship win. But, it wasn't all for nothing. The situation ignited a fire within the Ford racing team, and Carroll Shelby and Bob Bondurant were ready for war when the 1965 racing season came around.
Bondurant was the only Ford driver to return to Europe for the race, and he was ready to show Enzo Ferrari just what Ford and Shelby had in store for the Italian automaker. That fire that had been burning in the Ford team from the previous year had Bondurant dominating the entire season by winning 7 out of the 10 races in the series while piloting a then-new Shelby Daytona Coupe.
"Ferrari's ass is mine" are a few famous words uttered by Carroll Shelby during this time, and his team went on to win the 1965 FIA World Manufacturers' GT Championship. The championship title was well-deserved, and what makes it even better was the fact that it took place on the Fourth of July. In fact, this would be the first and last time that an American team would ever win this championship.
