The benefactor of a frame-off restoration, this handsome blue Packard of the 1930s is ready for concours
Owning an automobile in the 1920s and early 1930s was a real status symbol. ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it’ became the phrase of the day, with excessive chrome and enormous hood ornaments donning many luxury models.
However, for those with taste who still wanted a very fine automobile, Packard offered machines with both performance and elegance. This 1934 Packard 1101 Coupe is a beautiful example of classy motoring.
Offered for sale by the Classic Car Club of America, this exceptionally good looking Packard has benefited from a frame-off restoration. Its clean unfussy lines promotes a sophisticated ora, while a tall chrome grille highlights its premium nature without being crass. The sporting coupe profile leads with strong hood lines and flared fenders, but slopes away at the rear to create a dramatic sculpture. Deep blue paint with lighter pinstriping is the icing on this vintage cake.

Details on this car are scarce, but we believe that Packard’s famed 8-cylinder engine is under the hood. Its complete restoration appears to extend into the cabin where a large grey bench seat offers occupants a comfortable perch.
This Packard was a forward thinking automobile for its time, using innovative ideas to boost refinement. The engine sits on rubber mounts to damp any vibration, and adjustable shock absorbers could be altered to ensure comfort even on rough roads. Various coachbuilders took advantage of this advanced chassis, but Packard also provided its own bodywork from the factory.
The Great Depression hit the automotive industry hard, and 1934 was a particularly trying year for Packard. While it retained a good chunk of the market, far fewer luxury vehicles were being ordered. This 1101 Coupe was one of them, perhaps by an owner who managed to escape the worst of The Great Depression?
