Special-edition 1980 Toyota Celica GT celebrates F1 legacy with unique styling and low mileage preservation.
One of Toyota’s rarest and most distinctive Celica models is heading to auction this week as part of The Carolina Collection. This 1980 Toyota Celica GT Liftback USGP Edition is one of just 600 ever built and shows only 39,279 original miles.

Created to commemorate Toyota’s support of the U.S. Grand Prix in Long Beach, California, the USGP Edition was offered for a single model year with a highly limited production run of 200 units each in red, white, and blue. This red example, equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and factory air conditioning, stands as a remarkably preserved piece of Toyota and motorsport history.

Powered by the 2.2-liter “20R” inline-four engine, the Celica GT USGP Edition offers a blend of dependable Japanese engineering and sporty flair. The GT Liftback was the top-tier Celica trim, and this special edition added a range of exclusive details, including a honeycomb grille, flat black B-pillars, Grand Prix-themed body stripes, alloy wheels, and front and rear mudguards.

Inside, unique Ivory vinyl seats with black piping, an ivory-colored headliner, and a dash-mounted USGP plaque distinguish this limited-run Celica. A deluxe AM/FM/cassette audio system with a graphic equalizer was standard, underlining the car’s upscale positioning in Toyota’s lineup at the time.

Originally sold by Jim White Toyota in Toledo, Ohio, the Celica remained with its original owner, Barney Edwards, for 32 years. It underwent an engine tune-up and full suspension rebuild within the past decade, preserving its roadworthiness while maintaining originality. The sale includes the factory owner’s manual, 1980 service guide, and some service records.
As interest in preserved Japanese classics continues to grow, this one-year-only Celica GT USGP Edition represents a unique opportunity for collectors seeking rarity, style, and low mileage in one of the most beloved nameplates of the era. See it here.
