Unique 1963 Studebaker Avanti R1 with Turin Auto Show History Heads To Bring A Trailer

Rare 1963 Studebaker Avanti R1, shown at the 1962 Turin Auto Show, boasts rich provenance and impeccable preservation.

A true gem of automotive history, a 1963 Studebaker Avanti R1 with a storied past is now available for purchase. Originally exhibited at the 1962 Turin Auto Show in Italy, this rare fiberglass coupe was custom-ordered for artist Anita Venier Alexander and shipped back to the United States by her husband, renowned psychoanalyst Dr. Franz Alexander. Its provenance, combined with meticulous preservation and maintenance, makes this Avanti a standout in the classic car world.

This Avanti began its life as a showpiece at one of Europe’s most prestigious auto exhibitions. Following its display, the car was disassembled, crated, and shipped to Southern California, where it was reassembled and delivered to the Alexanders. Mrs. Alexander cherished the vehicle until 1973, after which it passed through a series of Southern California owners before landing with its current caretaker in November 2024.

Finished in a special cream color with red vinyl upholstery, the Avanti is powered by a 289ci Jet Thrust V8 engine producing 240 horsepower. Paired with a Power Shift three-speed automatic transmission and Twin Traction limited-slip differential, the car exemplifies the innovative engineering of its era. The interior, adorned with aircraft-inspired controls and a "Beauty Vanity" makeup mirror in the glovebox, offers a mix of luxury and quirkiness. Other notable features include power-assisted front disc brakes, air conditioning, and a push-button AM radio.

This Avanti has been carefully maintained throughout its life, with detailed service records dating back to 1973. Recent updates include a rebuilt carburetor (2021), a new air-conditioning compressor with R134a refrigerant (2022), and a fresh oil change in October 2024. The odometer shows 55,000 miles, with just 5,000 miles added by the previous owner.

Documentation and Legacy

Accompanied by extensive paperwork, including its original production order and service history, this Avanti also features correspondence from previous owners and Studebaker literature. Its chassis number, R4302, aligns with its original documentation, affirming its authenticity.

This 1963 Studebaker Avanti R1, a symbol of mid-century automotive innovation and style, is not only a collectible but a piece of history. Don’t miss the chance to own this exceptional vehicle.
