Time Capsule: 303-Mile 1984 Camaro Z28 Offers Pristine Example of 1980s Muscle

With just 303 miles, this all-original Z28 Camaro represents one of the best-preserved third-gen examples left in existence.

A remarkably preserved 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with just 303 original miles has surfaced ahead of auction, offering collectors an extraordinary opportunity to acquire one of the most original third-generation Camaros known to exist.

Finished in black with silver stripes and a Light Sand Gray cloth interior, this showroom-quality Z28 hails from The Carolina Collection and has remained virtually untouched since it rolled off the Norwood, Ohio assembly line. Originally delivered to Matway Chevrolet in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, the vehicle retains its factory build sheets and features all-original powertrain components—including the optional L69 High Output 305 cubic-inch V8 and four-speed automatic transmission.

The Z28’s L69 engine, mated with a Rochester four-barrel carburetor and performance-tuned suspension, delivered respectable performance for the era, bridging the muscle car gap between the 1970s horsepower wars and the electronic fuel injection boom of the late 1980s. The powertrain is paired with a 3.73:1 rear axle, further enhancing its off-the-line response.

Chevrolet’s 1984 Camaro lineup was praised for its handling, and the Z28 stood out with aggressive styling, a rear spoiler, and digital gauges. Car and Driver declared it the “best handling American car of 1984,” citing its “delightful combination of tight adhesion, telegraphic controls, manageable response, and forgiving limits.”

Options on this car include factory air conditioning, aluminum wheels with white-letter tires, power brakes, a tilt steering column, and the original ETR stereo cassette system. Though the tires and battery have been replaced for safety, the rest of the car remains untouched—down to its original upholstery, spoiler, and decals.

This Z28 has passed through a handful of states including Pennsylvania, Arizona, and California, before entering The Carolina Collection in 2024. With a clean CARFAX history and “like new” condition, this Camaro represents a rare collector-grade example of 1980s American performance that’s unlikely to be replicated.
