Offered without reserve at Broad Arrow Auctions.
The iconic 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe, one of the most coveted sports cars of its era, is set to cross the block at Broad Arrow Auctions as part of The Academy of Art University Collection. Offered without reserve, this exquisite example is estimated to fetch between $1,200,000 and $1,500,000.
Originally developed from Mercedes-Benz's 1952 racing car, the 300 SL Gullwing is renowned for its groundbreaking design and engineering. The tubular space frame necessitated its signature gullwing doors, a feature that became synonymous with mid-century automotive innovation. Powered by a 3.0-liter straight-six engine featuring direct fuel injection—a first for production cars—the Gullwing produced 215 horsepower, a 40-horsepower boost over its carbureted racing predecessor. With a top speed of over 160 mph, the Gullwing was a marvel of its time.
This particular example, chassis 5500429, began its life on June 20, 1955, originally finished in Graphite Grey (DB190) over a Red leather interior (1079). It was one of just 61 cars in this color for the 1955 model year and was delivered to Mercedes-Benz Distributors in New York as a special order.
The car's provenance includes three early owners in the San Francisco Bay Area before it passed to notable collector and former San Diego Padres owner John Jay Moores. Under Moores' stewardship, the car underwent a comprehensive, body-off restoration by Hjeltness Restorations in Escondido, California. During the restoration, the car's livery was changed to its current, rare Strawberry Red Metallic (DB543) with a Natural leather (1068) interior, a striking and rare combination.
The restoration left no detail overlooked, from the perfectly fitted belly pans to the finely crafted two-piece luggage set, commissioned to match the car’s bespoke interior. The restoration also included a set of sports wheels with polished aluminum centers, providing a sporty touch without the additional weight of Rudge knock-offs.
Following the restoration, the Gullwing passed into the collection of Sid Craig, with his widow Jenny Craig later selling the car in 2008. It was acquired by The Academy of Art University Collection in 2009, where it has been displayed for the past 15 years, offering students and the public a firsthand look at this masterpiece of automotive history.
Now offered at auction, this Gullwing retains its numbers-matching chassis, engine, and body, as confirmed by the Gullwing Group Registry and accompanying documentation. Its Strawberry Red Metallic bodywork, combined with its impeccable restoration and rarity, ensures it will command attention on concours lawns or grand touring events alike.
With its timeless design, historical significance, and extraordinary provenance, this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe is a prime opportunity for collectors to acquire one of the most celebrated and admired sports cars of the 20th century.
