Rare 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup 3.8 Set for Auction

One of 57 built, this 1996 911 Cup car boasts race pedigree, factory originality, and meticulous ownership history.

A rare 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup 3.8, one of only 57 examples built for the final air-cooled generation of Cup cars, is headed to auction at Broad Arrow’s Air|Water Auction in 2025. The car, chassis WP0ZZZ99ZTS398105, carries a pre-sale estimate of $225,000 to $250,000 and comes with a rich European race history, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and long-term U.S. ownership.

Finished in rare factory black—one of just seven in that color—the Cup-spec 993 was purpose-built by Porsche Motorsport with a 315-horsepower 3.8-liter flat-six, stripped interior, full Matter roll cage, magnesium Speedline center-lock wheels, and adjustable coil-over suspension. The ultra-lightweight racer tipped the scales around 2,400 pounds, making it the lightest 993-based competition car.

Its documented competition pedigree includes participation in the 1998 French FFSA GT Championship under the Estoril Racing Team banner, where driver Luis Marques campaigned the car against formidable opponents such as 911 GT2s and Venturi 400s. In 2001, the car raced across European circuits including the Nürburgring, Spa, Zandvoort, and Monza as part of the “GTP Weekend” series.

Imported to the United States in 2006 by NGT Motorsport, the 911 Cup car was shown at Porsche Rennsport Reunion III in Daytona before joining the current owner’s collection in 2008. Since then, it has been regularly maintained and race-prepped by Wright Motorsports, a respected name in Porsche competition circles. The sale includes the car’s DMSB Wagenpass, service documentation, and race history.

For collectors and drivers alike, this Cup 3.8 represents one of the last, pure expressions of analog Porsche racing machines—a high-revving, air-cooled icon with authentic track provenance. See it here.
