Make room for these classic bikes!
If you are a motorcycle fanatic, you probably know that it’s actually pretty rare to find a great selection of vintage motorbikes together in one spot. Sure, it’s part of the fun to be in on the hunt. But every once in a while, someone will unearth a crazy selection to be offered at the same time.
This time it’s the acclaimed auction house, Gooding & Company, who will be selling a host of stunning vintage motorcycles at their upcoming Amelia Island Auctions this March. Enter Leo Schiegiel, one of the most well known motorcycle collectors based in Miami, Florida. With a curatorial eye and a penchant for showmanship, The Leo Schigiel Motorcycle Collection is perfectly poised to make a whole new set of collectors’ dreams come true. Here are some of the standouts. They’re all being offered without reserve (no minimum price), which is not only rare, but great for collectors just starting their motorcycle collections.
1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport(Estimate: $125,000 – $175,000, Without Reserve)
To the untrained eye, this is a stunning Ducati. But to a trained eye, this motorcycle is an absolute piece of treasure. It’s remarkably rare, only one of just 401 examples built. It also is one of just 88 that were imported to the US. If that wasn’t enough, it’s believed to be one of only 20 unrestored Super Sports out there. It had just over 8,500 km when catalogued, so it’s the perfect mix of patina and preservation.
1974 Ducati 750 Sport(Estimate: $35,000 – $45,000, Without Reserve)
This Ducati is one of the marque’s most collectible road-going models. It is powered by a classic Fabio Taglioni-designed bevel-drive twin engine. This particular model was featured in the May 2016 Issue of Cycle World magazine as a pristine example of one of the world’s most beautiful motorcycles. The 758 CC Four-Stroke 90° twin engine is likely any motorhead’s dream come true.
1956 Ariel Square Four with Garrard Sidecar(Estimate: $34,000 – $45,000, Without Reserve)
This gem is one of the most beautiful sidecar-accompanied models ever, without feeling like a gimmick at all. On one side, you’ve got the extraordinary Ariel Square Four in incredible condition. Just feet away, you have the exceedingly rare two-seater Garrard sidecar. The whole package was restored by marque specialist Chuck Walton. It’s ripe for the show circuit, having been exhibited at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, as well as The Quail Motorcycle Gathering.
1966 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy(Estimate: $40,000 – $60,000, Without Reserve)
As James May once said, “It’s impossible to be miserable when you’re driving a beach buggy.” Especially when it looks this good. This loveable example is highly original, displaying less than 5,700 miles at the time of cataloguing. It has its original red convertible top and side curtains. Whether you’re an East coaster, a West coaster, or a beach lover, this buggy is bound to bring the feeling of endless summer. Bonus points if you use it in non-beach weather.
1941 Indian Four Model 441(Estimate: $100,000 – $130,000, Without Reserve)
You simply cannot talk about great motorcycles without bringing an Indian Four Model into the conversation. This is indisputably one of the last great American four-cylinder motorcycles in existence. It comes equipped with a delightfully attractive cream and green paint scheme, and was restored by the previous owner, who took it on AMCA runs. Not only is it iconic, visionary, and fun, but it’s also highly collectible.
If we’ve just awoken or stirred the motorcycle lover in you, you don’t have to abandon the rush of it all right this second. You can peruse the Gooding & Company catalogue ahead of the Amelia Island Auctions in March with even more beautiful examples here, or register to bid if they’ve already wooed you.
