The historic Essex Wire Cobra, one of the most successful 427 Competition Cobras, will cross the block at Mecum Kissimmee 2025.
Few cars encapsulate the spirit of American racing history like the 1965 Shelby 427 Competition Cobra Roadster, and this January, enthusiasts have the chance to witness the sale of one of the most storied examples: CSX3009, affectionately nicknamed “Ollie the Dragon.” Set to cross the Mecum Kissimmee 2025 auction block, this iconic vehicle is widely regarded as the winningest Competition Cobra of all time.
A Legacy of Performance
Finished in the striking Essex Wire livery of Wimbledon White with a black stripe bordered by orange accents, CSX3009 boasts a remarkable racing pedigree. Campaigned by Robert "Skip" Scott and later Ed Lowther, the car achieved numerous victories, including the 1966 SCCA A Production Championship and two SCCA National Championships in 1973 and 1974 under Sam Feinstein. Known for shooting flames through its hood scoop, earning its fiery nickname, the Cobra has an unparalleled legacy in motorsport.
Powering CSX3009 is a 427 CI side-oiler V8, factory-rated at 485 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Original competition features such as unmuffled side exhausts, aluminum competition heads, and a Salisbury limited-slip differential highlight its racing pedigree. This Cobra also retains rare components like its magnesium intake manifold, original Halibrand magnesium wheels, and period-correct Firestone tires.
Meticulous Restoration
Immaculately restored by renowned Cobra specialist Mike McCluskey, with input from Carroll Shelby himself, CSX3009 was returned to its Essex Wire glory. The restoration was so exacting that it scored an unprecedented 497 out of 500 points at the SAAC-38 event in Fontana, earning Gold and cementing its place as the highest-scoring Competition Cobra restoration in history.
A Rich Historical Archive
CSX3009’s history is extensively documented, including its original magnesium wheels, competition cylinder heads, and 1966 racing gear from Ed Lowther. The car is accompanied by an impressive archive of period photos, restoration records, and even a detailed 1:5 scale model crafted in honor of its legacy.
