Iconic 1966 Ford GT40 MkI, the first road car sold to a private owner, to be auctioned in Kissimmee, January 2025.
The legendary 1966 Ford GT40 MkI Road Car, a hallmark of automotive history, will take center stage at Mecum’s Kissimmee Auction on January 18, 2025. With chassis number P/1034, this car boasts a rich heritage as the first GT40 road car delivered to a private owner and the first sent to the United Kingdom.
Originally ordered by James Fielding, chairman of Heenan & Froude, a company integral to GT40 performance testing, this Pine Green coupe stands out as one of only 31 MkI road cars ever produced. Delivered in March 1966 by racing icon Jackie Stewart, it retains its original body panels, tub, and ZF 5-speed transaxle—a rarity among GT40s, especially those raced competitively.
Powered by a 289 CI HiPo V-8 engine, meticulously rebuilt by Mathwall Engineering, the car outputs 335 horsepower, courtesy of four Weber 48IDA carburetors. Its fascinating history spans decades, including stints on racetracks across Australia, Europe, and the U.S. Notably, it was repainted in Gulf colors for a time and later restored to its original Pine Green with silver stripes.
Highlights of its racing legacy include appearances at the Amaroo Park in 1980, Adelaide Grand Prix Support Historic Races in the mid-1980s, and historic competitions like the Stuttgart Grand Prix at Hockenheimring, which it won in 1999. The car has graced prestigious events such as Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Goodwood Revival, earning accolades like the Chairman's Award at Salon Privé.
Accompanied by extensive documentation, including a history dossier by marque expert Ronnie Spain, this GT40 remains eligible for iconic events like the Le Mans Classic. It represents not just a car but a symbol of engineering excellence and motorsport heritage, making it a coveted piece for collectors worldwide.
