Historic 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa Set to Headline Inaugural Broad Arrow Villa d’Este Auction

A rare 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa, one of Ferrari’s earliest and most original models, could fetch €7.5M at auction.

Broad Arrow Auctions, a Hagerty company, has announced the consignment of a 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa (chassis 004 C) to its first Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Auction. With an estimate of €5.5M–€7.5M, this iconic car is poised to be the crown jewel of the May 24–25 event on the picturesque shores of Lake Como.

Historic Significance
The 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa is a cornerstone of Ferrari’s legacy. One of two examples purchased by Ferrari’s first customers, the Besana brothers, chassis 004 C boasts an illustrious racing history. Highlights include finishing sixth at the 1948 Targa Florio and competing in the 1948 and 1949 Mille Miglia, alongside numerous Formula Two and hill climb events.

Originality and Provenance
Certified by Ferrari Classiche with its original body, chassis, 2.0-liter V12 engine, and five-speed gearbox, the car stands as one of the most original early Ferraris in existence. Owned by a single family for 50 years (1965–2015), its provenance is meticulously documented through extensive editorial coverage. Awards and accolades include a class win at the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a 2003 FCA National Meet Best of Show, and multiple Cavallino and FCA Platinum Awards.

Broad Arrow’s European Debut
The Villa d’Este auction marks Broad Arrow’s inaugural European event, held in partnership with BMW AG during the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The sale will feature 70 top-tier collector cars, with Thomas Forrester—a renowned UK auctioneer—leading the event.

Barney Ruprecht, VP of Auctions at Broad Arrow, emphasizes, “Chassis 004 C represents the very foundation of Ferrari’s storied brand. Its remarkable history and originality make it an extraordinary highlight for our first Italian auction.”

With its unparalleled pedigree and historical significance, this Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa is set to captivate collectors and enthusiasts worldwide during its historic appearance at Villa d’Este.
