Exceptionally Preserved 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster From Broad Arrow Private Sales

A rare, matching-numbers 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster in triple black with disc brakes and an extraordinary provenance.

The 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, chassis no. 198.042.10.002999 and engine no. 198.980.10.003070, presents a rare opportunity for discerning collectors. As one of only 263 cars produced that year with the ultimate disc brake and cast-iron engine block specification, this Roadster is a standout example of the most coveted iteration of the W198 series.

This remarkable Roadster is one of just 165 finished in Black and one of only two featuring the desirable triple-black livery (paint, leather, and soft top) with an optional black hardtop. Factory-equipped with a Becker Mexico radio and whitewall tires, it retains its matching-numbers drivetrain, body, chassis, steering box, differential housing, and front axle carriers.

Unlike the alloy block introduced later in 1962, which proved more prone to cylinder corrosion and reliability issues, the cast-iron block in this Roadster offers enhanced durability. Coupled with factory disc brakes, this car represents the peak of W198 engineering before Mercedes transitioned to less robust specifications.

Chassis no. 002999 boasts an exceptional four-owner history, including 39 years under the care of a single family. Initially delivered to John Beeler of Los Angeles, the car was passed to Robert and Carolyne Clark of Newport Beach in 1977, who maintained it meticulously. In 2016, it changed hands twice, finding its current owner in 2022.

Despite its age, the car retains much of its factory-applied Black paint, original Black leather interior, and functional Becker Mexico radio. The body, trim, and mechanical components show age-appropriate patina while remaining remarkably preserved. Electrical components, including original seals and wiring, are functional and authentic.

From 2022 to 2023, marque specialist Mark Allin of Rare Drive performed an exhaustive mechanical recommissioning, including an engine rebuild, wiring harness replacement, and running gear preservation. The work, documented with over $300,000 in invoices, ensures the Roadster is both mechanically sound and respectful of its originality.

Accompanying the car is extensive documentation, including its original owner’s manual, parts catalog, factory Data Card, Mercedes-Benz Classic Center report, and service invoices. This car’s originality and provenance position it as a strong candidate for preservation classes at prestigious concours events.

This 1962 300 SL Roadster offers an unparalleled blend of originality, mechanical excellence, and historical importance, making it an ideal acquisition for the world’s most discerning collectors. For inquiries and pricing, contact Broad Arrow Private Sales.
