When it comes to legendary automobiles, this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL ranks quite high. Not only did these cars with their dramatic gullwing doors and alluring dimensions wow buyers back in the day, they’ve been inspiring enthusiasts and even automotive designers ever since. Now is your chance to own an example which is buttoned up tight and ready to be enjoyed, thanks to Mecum.
The main attraction at the upcoming Kissimmee event this January, this sports car was originally owned by the Prince of Salm Salm. He special ordered it with Graphite Gray paint and a Blue plaid interior for a look which is unique and admittedly quite handsome. A recent cosmetic refresh leaves everything look absolutely spectacular, including almost flawless chrome as well as a leather suitcase set fitted to the rear cargo area.
Many original elements are still present on this Mercedes-Benz, including the belly pans, VDO gauges, and Becker Mexico radio, showing just how well it’s been cared for. A Dr. J Theodore Luros purchased this car from the prince in 1961. A neurosurgeon from Indianapolis, he had the means and interest to maintain the vehicle meticulously. The man held onto it until 2005.
Even more importantly, the fuel-injected 2996cc straight-six engine is a numbers-matching unit. It includes dry sump lubrication as well as a 4-speed manual transmission. That alone helps tremendously with the value of this highly collectable and desirable vehicle.
On top of that, this Mercedes comes with some nice extras, like a factory SWF windshield washer. All the prior registrations for it, the original owner’s manual, complete tool kit, as well as exhaustive restoration records are to be included with the sale.
Undoubtedly, quite a few collectors have an eye on this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. However, if you want a shot at it, you’ll need to register to bid through Mecum before the event in January.
