Some topics deserve more love, a little more time, and a deeper discussion. Since the last episode of the Motorious Podcast, we’ve had several requests to give a little more attention to hot stories in the automotive industry. Here’s what we covered:

And now the stories:

Australian Police Bust Mad Max Copycat

There used to be a time when Australians weren’t afraid to get some dirt under their fingernails, drive muscle cars, and not drape themselves in bubble wrap. Unfortunately, those days are over as many Aussies have voluntarily handed in their man card. Case in point: police pulled over a guy in Queensland because he modified his Ford Falcon to look like the hero car in the original Mad Max movie.

According to ABC News, after the driver was pulled over, police issued a fine “for driving a defective vehicle.” They also required the driver to get a “roadworthy certificate.” Sounds pretty serious and it’s obvious Queensland Police are in a huff about this incident. Read the full story here.

Man Turns Driveway Into Drift Track

As car enthusiasts, we love almost nothing more than having fun in our favorite performance cars. Whether you are a collector whose vehicles barely ever make it out of the garage, drift junky always ready to take tight corners with a smile on your face, or drag racer looking to push the limits of speed and power, we can all appreciate a good track day. However, some areas seldom ever have racing events or even a track to go to, which is what led a particular car guy from Japan to develop his own ideas.

Apparently, the least ridiculous option was to build a mini drift track around the front yard of his and his wife's house in New Zealand. So naturally, those of us who live in homeowners association-controlled neighborhoods may be scratching our heads about how he could do this. However, the community's reaction is possibly the funniest part of the project. In true neighborly fashion, rather than getting upset and calling some manager somewhere to give him a ridiculous $45 fine, everyone in the area jumped for joy in hopes of helping with the build process and eventual victory lap. This can be seen through the video, which features a full-length montage of people coming together to lend a hand to their friend Takeshi Teruya, the homeowner and car guy in question.

The whole thing added up to about $10,500, an excellent price for a track that spans around 0.1 miles of land. He was able to do all of this and get such a bargain because of his friends' help. When all was said and done, he finished the project off with an arch above the start and finish line, which reads "#FamilyDriveway," a great way of honoring the hard work that the whole team put in as well as his wife and two children. This thing was built to let the entire family have fun, and it looks like it will be here for decades to come. So to everyone involved, we say good luck and have fun! Read the full story here.

Would-Be Corvette Carjacker Arrested On 31 Charges In Florida

A guy in Pinellas County, Florida decided it would be a good idea to run from the cops and try to carjack a Chevy Corvette. In the process of him showing off what he learned while spending many hours playing Grand Theft Auto, he managed to rack up 31 separate charges, helping to guarantee he won’t be getting out of prison for a long time. These are the kind of dumb criminals we love to see in action.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff, who so graciously uploaded helicopter footage of the chase, this incident went down on the afternoon of March 6. Someone made a call about two men fighting each other at Dunedin Cove Motel, what we hear is the swankiest motel in all of Florida. When deputies arrived, they learned the fight was over a drug deal. That’s when 27-year old Kenneth Lunford, Jr. stole the other guy’s car and ran from the law.

During the chase, multiple law enforcement agencies jumped in to help. This guy was pretty slippery, especially since he was willing to put everyone else on the road in jeopardy with his very illegal and dangerous driving. Read the full story here.

Barn Find Dodge Viper Is A Nightmare Come True

Back in the day, that is the 1990s, people considered the Dodge Viper to be an amazing, valuable machine. Raw and visceral, they were appropriately named since anyone who didn’t exercise caution with one would get bit. They were a worthy successor to the Shelby Cobra’s legacy, a fact which raises the ire of many a Ford enthusiast, but even they would agree treating one like this barn find should be a flogging-worthy offense.

Technically, this Dodge Viper wasn’t left in a barn. No, it was kept in a forest, which is even worse. Instead of there maybe being some barn owl droppings on the body and maybe some mice nesting inside, Raccoons likely were propagating on the hood and who knows what else was going on with this Mopar masterpiece. Just thinking about it we get really angry, so let’s just leave it at that. Read the full story here.

General Patton’s Car Accident Remains Controversial Today

Dead from injuries sustained in a car crash after the close of WWII, General George S. Patton, Jr. left in his wake a tremendous legacy. While some have mourned what was a tragic loss at the time, others over the decades have theorized Patton’s death was anything but an accident.

Known for his aggressive nature just as much as his many battlefield victories, General George S. Patton was like a giant among men. He was one of the few allied generals who had combat experience commanding tanks during WWI, making him invaluable during the North Africa campaign. Later, he embarrassed many of his peers in Sicily, Italy by winning the race to Messina against the British Eighth Army. Read the full story here.
