Unregistered for 51 Years: Rare 1970 Ford Falcon XY GT Heads to Auction

A time-capsule 1970 Ford Falcon XY GT, unregistered since 1973 and boasting only 24,000 miles, goes to auction in January 2025.

A remarkable piece of Australian motoring history, a 1970 Ford Falcon XY GT, is set to hit the auction block after spending more than five decades in storage. This rare time-capsule vehicle, owned by its original buyer, has remained unregistered since 1973.

The Ford Falcon XY GT is one of Australia’s most iconic muscle cars, with only 163 units produced in Yellow Ochre. This particular car, with 24,000 miles (38,624 km) on the odometer, retains its original, unrestored paintwork, graphics, and black vinyl interior. Purchased new in 1970 from Wright Ford in Sydney, it was later registered in Victoria, where it remained under careful storage for decades.

Powered by a 351-cubic inch (5.8-litre) Cleveland V8 engine with a signature "shaker" air intake, the XY GT delivered performance and style that defined the muscle car era. This example features an automatic transmission, a factory-fitted sunroof, and dealer-installed air conditioning, making it a standout among its peers.

“It was a weekend car; he was a full rev-head,” said Daniel Lamprell, Managing Director at Chicane Auctions. “The car lived in Richmond its whole life... it’s dry, not rusted, and comes with pristine books documenting its originality.”

While Lamprell estimates the car could fetch between $100,000 and $200,000, recent sales suggest it might exceed expectations, with similar examples reaching up to $225,000. Though not as rare as the GTHO Phase III variant—which once commanded over $1 million—the XY GT remains a highly sought-after collector's item.

For enthusiasts and collectors, this Falcon represents an extraordinary opportunity to own a pristine piece of Australian automotive heritage. Its upcoming sale is sure to generate significant interest, celebrating the enduring legacy of Ford’s iconic muscle cars.
