Keith Richards’s 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT Expected to Rock the Auction House

The rocker has quite the car collection as well.

A piece of rock ‘n’ roll history is heading to the auction block, with the sale of a 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT once owned by the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. The silver coupe, which witnessed extensive journeys across Europe during the Stones' tours, is set to be one of the highlights of this year's Monterey Car Week.

Purchased in California by Richards in 1972, the Dino became a prized possession, and it's no wonder why. Its factory-correct coat of Argento Metallizzato, a sophisticated black Connolly leather interior, and Cromadora alloy wheels add to the appeal. But more than its aesthetic attributes, it's the history of this particular car that might have bidders on the edge of their seats.

Richards, who might be considered as unconventional as he is legendary, was not content with merely keeping the car for show. He racked up over 25,000 miles in the decade he owned it, often driving it while on tour in Europe.

The car was eventually sold in the mid-80s but continues to hold its allure. Over the past four decades, it has been cared for by several collectors, including musician Liam Howlett of the Prodigy. The Dino was restored to its original glory in the past decade, with every detail echoing the time when Richards first bought it.

The sports car's 2.4-liter V-6 engine may not make it the most powerful of the Prancing Horse marque, but it's far from underwhelming, boasting a top speed of 146 mph. Its uniqueness as an "E Series" example from the Dino's final three years of production further adds to its desirability.

RM Sotheby's, the renowned auction house, will be handling the sale of Richard's Dino as part of its annual Monterey Car Week auction event from Wednesday, July 16, to Saturday, July 19. With no reserve price, the car is expected to fetch between $400,000 and $500,000.

Those who have followed the music and automotive industries are watching this auction with great interest. The sale of this vehicle represents not only an extraordinary piece of automotive craftsmanship but a tangible connection to one of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century.

The appeal of owning a car that once belonged to a rock legend, especially one who has played such an integral role in shaping the music landscape, may well drive the bidding beyond expectations. Collectors, fans, and automotive enthusiasts alike may be lining up for the chance to own a car that is much more than a means of transportation - it is a piece of rock 'n' roll history.

It will be an electrifying moment when the gavel falls, and the new owner of Keith Richards's former 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT takes possession of a car that was once a dynamic part of the Rolling Stones' touring life. Whether it will continue to be driven with passion or preserved as a piece of history, the legacy of this Dino is sure to continue.
