1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS Offered at Broad Arrow Auctions

Rare 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS with rich racing history, original bodywork, and extensive documentation.

The 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, one of Porsche's most revered and historically significant race cars, will be a highlight at the Broad Arrow Auctions at the Monterey Jet Center in 2024. With an estimated value between $2,200,000 and $2,500,000, this remarkable vehicle presents a unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Chassis number 904 057 was originally sold to the Spanish racer Juan Fernández, a prominent figure in motorsport with a career spanning over four decades. This particular car, one of only 107 produced, retains its original bodywork and matching-numbers transmission, enhancing its desirability and authenticity. The vehicle is currently equipped with a four-cam engine built to 587/3 specifications from a blank case, although it originally featured Nürburgring gears and a Sebring exhaust system.

The 904 Carrera GTS marked a pivotal point in Porsche's history, representing the final iteration of their dual-use road/race cars. Known for its innovative fiberglass body construction and lightweight design, the 904 was a dominant force in motorsport during the 1964-65 racing seasons. Notable achievements include class victories at the 12 Hours of Sebring, Nürburgring 1000 Kms, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Fernández's 904 057 had a successful racing career, particularly in regional hillclimbs and circuit races across Europe, earning him the nickname "El Rey de Las Montañas" or "The King of the Mountains."

This 904 Carrera GTS is considered one of the most original examples, featuring its unaltered frame welded chassis tag, riveted aluminum chassis plate, and original bodywork. The interior includes correct blue Dralon material seats, a period driver's-side plastic floor covering, and original date-coded VDO gauges. The car is offered with extensive documentation, including a digital copy of its Kardex, a comprehensive period scrapbook detailing its race history, and a Jochen Bader report confirming its condition as of July 2022.

Throughout its life, the 904 057 has been meticulously maintained and restored. Notably, the car was painted in Bahama Yellow and enjoyed road use under the ownership of Dr. Daniel P. Boyd in Virginia. Subsequent owners included Student Naval Aviator Jonathan Wort, who repainted it with a Navy-themed livery and participated in local autocross events. In the 1980s, it was sympathetically restored by Robert Smith of St. Louis, Missouri, who ensured its originality was preserved. The car returned to Germany in the early 1990s and was later showcased by the Blackhawk Collection during Pebble Beach car week in 2001. More recently, the vehicle has been enjoyed in historic events across Spain and Europe, ensuring its operational readiness.

Chassis number 904 057 stands as a testament to Porsche's engineering prowess and racing heritage. Its blend of originality, documented history, and racing pedigree make it an unparalleled offering in today's market. Whether for display in exclusive concours events or participation in top-level historic competitions, the 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS promises to be a treasured addition to any collection.
